Tips for organizing a winery tour in Mendoza

Hugo Laricchia explains why visiting Disney for Adults can be a challenge for enthusiasts.

"Traveling to Mendoza and visiting wineries may be the dream plan for a wine lover or for someone who wants a few days of relaxation in what we call "Disney for adults," but it may not be as easy as you think, so we are going to give you some tips to make it the trip of your dreams."

1) Plan. It is very important to plan this tour in advance, select wineries, areas, lunches, providers, accommodation. All serious wineries require prior reservations, the tasting rooms have limited capacity, 8, 10 or 12 people, and the wineries have three or four daily shifts, when the reservation quota is full there is no more availability. There is no such thing as going to the door of the winery without a reservation and trying to enter, or to visit it, or to taste wines, or even to buy. Without a reservation you cannot enter and the ideal is to arrange reservations thirty days in advance.

2) Where to go? In Mendoza there are three wine tourism areas: Luján de Cuyo, Maipú and Valle de Uco. It is reasonable not to go from one area to another on the same day, you lose a lot of time going and living and you take away from the wineries and tastings. You also have to take into account that in each area the distances can be very large, for example between Zuccardi Piedra Infinita and Huentala Wines there is an hour and a quarter of route, and both are in the Uco Valley, so hiring someone who knows and getting advice is a good decision.

3) ¿Cómo es un día de bodegas? The standard plan for a day tour is to visit and taste at two wineries and have lunch at a third, although it is highly recommended to reduce that to one visit and tasting and one lunch; this will allow for a more relaxed day without having to run from winery to winery.

4) Listen to those who know about wine tourism. Mendoza has more than a thousand wineries, most of them, and especially the best ones, are not the most well-known. Seriously, don't believe in marketing campaigns in traditional media and awards such as: “Best winery restaurant in the world”, “Best architecture”, “Best view”, “Best chef”. The truly good ones don't buy awards to then pay for articles in La Nación or similar.

5) Schedule and Dinner. Please note that wineries are open, with some exceptions, from 10:00 to 17:00, there are no visits to a winery in the afternoon or dinner in winery restaurants. On the other hand, dinner is not usually served after having lunch at a winery, this lunch is very abundant with lots of wine and ends around 17:00, having a reservation for dinner at a restaurant is almost a waste, better to take a walk, eat something frugal and go to bed, because the next day we will continue wine tasting.

6) What am I looking for? At this point, sincerity is required. It is not necessary to boast of being a great wine connoisseur if you are not one. It is better to come to learn. You can come to Mendoza to spend a dream weekend, to try the best wines, to take the best glamorous photos, to eat like almost nowhere else. Be clear with yourself and with whoever helps you, otherwise you are likely to miss what you are looking for. If a group of friends come who want to have fun, it is not the same as if a couple comes to celebrate their silver wedding anniversary. In the first case, we will look for wineries with a vibe, party-like, let's say; in the second, intimacy, elegance and romanticism. And if a wine connoisseur comes, we go for the wines, regardless of the views, the architecture or anything else. We will only choose wineries for what is inside the bottle.

7) ¿How? The wineries in Mendoza are not in the city, they are in rural areas where there is no efficient public transport system. Depending on your budget, there are many different alternatives, but the one that is not even worth considering is going in your own vehicle or a rental to visit wineries. First, because of responsibility, you will drink more than usual, then because of the alcohol tests carried out by the Mendoza Police, the fines are very, very expensive and include confiscation of the vehicle, documentation and even the arrest of the offender. The options range from a regular tour with a traditional agency, in which you leave the agency in a bus or minibus with a group of people and visit the wineries that the agency has scheduled, to a private tour with a car with a driver and bilingual and expert guide where you go to the wineries that you have chosen and almost all the visits are done in private in an exclusive room for you and whoever accompanies you, this is what Discovery Wines Mendoza is dedicated to.

8) Children and wineries: Although it can be organized, it is absolutely not recommended. A trip to the wineries in Mendoza is a plan for adults to have a relaxing getaway; it is by no means a family plan; neither the children nor the parents will have a good time; the children will be extremely bored, although it affects our sales possibilities. I must tell the truth and I say this from experience. If you cannot leave the children for two or three days, wait for them and come and have wine with them when they grow up. I am lucky enough to share wines and this wine tourism project with my children, and I can tell you that tasting a wine with them is an experience very close to complete happiness.

Uco Valley: Elegance in the Heights

Located at the foot of the Andes mountain range, the Uco Valley is one of the most exciting and promising wine regions in Mendoza. With an altitude ranging from 900 to 1,500 meters above sea level, the Uco Valley offers a cool climate and ideal conditions for growing high-end grape varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay.

The alluvial and stony soils of the Uco Valley, combined with the thermal amplitude between day and night, create a unique terroir that is reflected in the elegant and complex wines produced in the region. The wines of the Uco Valley are known for their intensity, freshness and fruit character, as well as their capacity for aging. With a growing reputation as a producer of some of Argentina's finest wines, the Uco Valley is a must-visit destination for wine lovers looking to discover new and exciting expressions of Argentine viticulture.

The Virgin of Carrodilla

Protector and Spiritual Guide of Mendoza.

In the province of Mendoza, Argentina, there is a presence that towers over the vineyards and mountain landscapes, a presence that has been revered and worshipped for centuries by locals: the Virgin of Carrodilla. This religious figure, whose history dates back to the 16th century, has come to be regarded as the protector and spiritual guide of the region, and her shrine is a place of pilgrimage and devotion for thousands of faithful each year. In this blog, we will explore the history and importance of the Virgin of Carrodilla in Mendoza and how her legacy has left an indelible mark on the culture and identity of the province.

Origins and Legends: The Miracle in the Vineyards

The history of the Virgin of Carrodilla dates back to the year 1630, when it is said that an image of the Virgin Mary was found in a vineyard near the present-day town of Carrodilla. According to legend, a group of farm workers were harvesting grapes when they discovered the image among the vines. Surprised by the find, they took the image to the nearest church, but the next day they found it again in the same place where they had originally found it. This event was repeated several times, until the locals interpreted the event as a miracle and decided to build a sanctuary on the spot where the image was found. Since then, the Virgin of Carrodilla has been venerated as a protector of the vineyards and a spiritual guide for the inhabitants of Mendoza.

Devotion and Pilgrimage: The Faith that Moves Mountains

Over the centuries, devotion to the Virgin of Carrodilla has grown and spread throughout the province of Mendoza and beyond. Every year, thousands of faithful flock to the sanctuary of the Virgin to pay homage, make requests and give thanks for the favors received. The Feast of the Virgin of Carrodilla, celebrated on December 8, is an especially important event, when devotees gather to participate in processions, masses and other religious activities. During this festival, the sanctuary is filled with faithful who come from all over to show their devotion and seek the protection and comfort of the Virgin.

Patroness of Vineyards: Blessings for the Harvest

One of the reasons the Virgin of Carrodilla is so revered in Mendoza is her role as the patron saint of vineyards and the wine industry. Farmers and winegrowers are said to flock to the shrine to ask the Virgin to bless their crops and protect their fields from inclement weather and pests. Many believe the intercession of the Virgin of Carrodilla has been key to the success of Mendoza's wine industry, which is one of the most important in Argentina and the world.

Icon of Identity and Culture: The Virgin in Everyday Life

In addition to her religious significance, the Virgin of Carrodilla is also a symbol of Mendoza's identity and culture. Her image can be found in churches, chapels and homes throughout the province, where she is venerated and honoured by the faithful in their daily lives. Furthermore, her influence extends through Mendoza's music, art and literature, where she is celebrated as a symbol of hope, protection and faith.

A Legacy of Faith and Hope

The Virgin of Carrodilla is much more than a religious figure in the province of Mendoza. She is a source of inspiration, comfort and hope for thousands of people who turn to her for help and protection. Her legacy endures throughout the centuries, reminding us of the importance of faith and devotion in our lives. So next time you are in Mendoza, take a moment to visit the shrine of the Virgin of Carrodilla, say a prayer and leave an offering in gratitude for her blessings.

San Martin Pass in Mendoza:

A Historic Legacy of Freedom and Sacrifice

The San Martin Pass in Mendoza is much more than just a crossing in Argentina's geography. It is a symbol of freedom, courage and sacrifice, marking one of the most momentous moments in the history of South America: the liberating feat led by General José de San Martín to free Argentina, Chile and Peru from Spanish rule. In this blog, we will explore this historic pass in depth, from its strategic importance to its enduring legacy in the collective memory of the region.

The Historical Context: The Gestation of a Liberating Dream

To understand the magnitude of the San Martin Pass in Mendoza, it is necessary to go back in time to the early 19th century, when much of South America was under Spanish colonial rule. Back then, figures such as Simon Bolivar in the north and Jose de San Martin in the south envisioned a continent free from Spanish oppression and began planning actions to make that dream a reality.

Military Strategy: The Crusade for Freedom

One of the pillars of San Martín's strategy to liberate South America was the crossing of the Andes Mountains, a logistical and military feat unprecedented in the history of the region. The San Martín Pass in Mendoza became the epicenter of this operation, as it allowed access to Chile, where it was hoped to continue the fight for independence.

The Strategic Legacy: The Road to Freedom

The San Martin Pass in Mendoza was not just a mountain crossing, but a path to freedom. San Martin and his army, along with the help of the Mendoza gauchos, crossed the Andes in extremely difficult conditions, facing the cold, the altitude and the scarcity of resources. However, their determination and courage led them to overcome all obstacles and reach the other side of the mountain range.

Human Sacrifice: The Epic of the Andes

The San Martin Pass feat in Mendoza was not without human sacrifice. Many soldiers died along the way, victims of the relentless climate and harsh mountain conditions. However, their sacrifice was not in vain, as their bravery paved the way for the independence of Chile and, eventually, all of South America.

The Enduring Legacy: The Footprint of Freedom

Today, the San Martin Pass in Mendoza is a place of memory and tribute to those who fought for the freedom of the region. Monuments, museums and historical sites recall the Andean epic and pay tribute to the heroes who led it. In addition, the pass remains an important border crossing between Argentina and Chile, keeping alive the connection between both countries and remembering the legacy of freedom and brotherhood that San Martin left behind.

The Significance of the San Martin Pass in Mendoza

San Martin Pass in Mendoza is much more than just a point on the map. It is a symbol of freedom, courage and sacrifice, marking one of the most important chapters in the history of South America. Through their liberating feat, San Martin and his army demonstrated to the world the power of courage and determination, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to inspire present and future generations. May San Martin Pass in Mendoza remain an eternal reminder of the fight for freedom and human dignity.

Birth of High-End Wine

The Emergence of High-End Wine in Mendoza: Tradition, Innovation and Excellence.

Mendoza, the crown jewel of the Argentine wine industry, is known worldwide for its high-quality wines and rich winemaking tradition. But how did high-end wine emerge in this region? What factors contributed to its success and international recognition? In this blog, we will explore the fascinating origin and evolution of high-end wine in Mendoza, from its modest beginnings to its position as the undisputed leader in the wine world.

Historical Roots: Mendoza's Wine Heritage

The history of wine in Mendoza dates back centuries, to the time of the indigenous peoples who inhabited the region. The Huarpes, the first inhabitants of Mendoza, cultivated vineyards in the foothills of the Andes using innovative irrigation techniques, such as irrigation ditches, to make the most of the scarce water resources in the region. With the arrival of the Spanish colonizers in the 16th century, viticulture in Mendoza experienced a new boost, with the introduction of European grape varieties and more advanced winemaking techniques.

The Rise of the Wine Industry: Innovation and Growth

Over the centuries, Mendoza's wine industry has experienced periods of growth and development, as well as crises and challenges. However, it was in the 20th century that high-end wine began to emerge as a distinctive and recognized category in the region. With the arrival of European immigrants, mostly Italian and Spanish, in the early 20th century, new grape varieties and winemaking techniques were introduced to Mendoza, laying the foundations for the production of high-quality wines.

Innovation and Experimentation: The Role of Pioneers

The emergence of high-end wine in Mendoza would not have been possible without the work and vision of the pioneers who dared to innovate and experiment with new grape varieties and winemaking techniques. Wineries such as Catena Zapata, Achával-Ferrer and Viña Cobos were pioneers in the production of high-end wines in the region, betting on quality and excellence above all else. Through experimentation with different terroirs, grape varieties and winemaking methods, these wineries managed to raise the profile of Mendoza wine and place it on the world wine stage.

Mendoza's Unique Terroir: The Key to Success

One of the main reasons for the success of high-end wine in Mendoza is the region’s unique terroir. With its semi-arid continental climate, fertile soils and high altitudes, Mendoza offers ideal conditions for growing grapes and producing high-quality wines. Mendoza’s vineyards stretch from the plains in the east to the foothills of the Andes in the west, allowing for a wide diversity of microclimates and soils that are reflected in the unique expression of each wine.

International Recognition: Mendoza on the World Wine Stage

Today, Mendoza’s premium wines are acclaimed worldwide for their exceptional quality, distinctive character and ability to express the region’s unique terroir. Thanks to the hard work of the region’s winegrowers, winemakers and winemakers, Mendoza has established itself as one of the world’s leading producers of premium wines, competing with iconic wine regions such as Bordeaux, Burgundy and Napa Valley.

The Future of High-End Wine in Mendoza: Innovation and Sustainability

As Mendoza continues its rise on the global wine stage, the future of high-end wine in the region looks promising. With a renewed focus on innovation, sustainability and excellence, Mendoza wineries are exploring new grape varieties, winemaking techniques and agricultural practices to continue improving the quality and diversity of their wines. At the same time, they are committed to protecting the environment and the sustainable development of the wine industry, ensuring that future generations can enjoy Mendoza’s high-end wines for many years to come.

In conclusion, the emergence of high-end wine in Mendoza is the result of centuries of tradition, innovation, passion for wine, unique terroir,  commitment to quality and  innovative spirit. From its modest beginnings to its international recognition, Mendoza wine has come a long way and remains a symbol of excellence and pride for the region.

The History of Mendoza Wine

Tradition, Innovation and Passion.

The Mendoza wine region in the heart of Argentina is known around the world for its high-quality wines and rich winemaking tradition. But the history of Mendoza wine is much more than just a list of varieties and wineries. It is a fascinating saga that stretches back centuries, spanning from the ancient vineyards of indigenous peoples to the innovative winemaking techniques of today. In this blog, we will explore the full history of Mendoza wine, from its humble beginnings to its place on the world wine stage.

The Origins: The Vineyards of the Indigenous Peoples

The history of wine in Mendoza begins long before the arrival of European colonizers. The region’s indigenous peoples, such as the Huarpes, cultivated vineyards in the foothills of the Andes long before the first Spanish settlements were established in the 16th century. Using ingenious irrigation techniques, such as irrigation canals known as “acequias,” the Huarpes were able to make the most of the region’s scarce water resources and cultivate indigenous grape varieties such as Criolla Grande and Moscatel.

The Colonial Era: The Spanish Influence on Viticulture in Mendoza

The arrival of Spanish colonizers in Mendoza in the 16th century marked a turning point in the region's wine history. With them, they brought European grape varieties such as Malbec, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, as well as more advanced winemaking techniques. The Jesuits, in particular, played a crucial role in the development of viticulture in Mendoza, establishing numerous wineries and vineyards in the region and teaching locals the arts of grape growing and wine production.

The Rise of the Wine Industry: The 19th Century and European Immigration

The 19th century saw a boom in Mendoza's wine industry, driven largely by the arrival of European immigrants, mostly Italian and Spanish, who brought with them their winemaking knowledge and traditions. The first commercial wineries began to spring up in the region, and wine production experienced exponential growth. The construction of the railroad in the late 19th century facilitated the transportation of wines to other regions of Argentina and abroad, allowing Mendoza's wine industry to flourish even further.

The Wine Industry Crisis: The 20th Century and Phylloxera

Despite its growth and development during the 19th century, Mendoza's wine industry suffered a serious crisis at the beginning of the 20th century due to the arrival of phylloxera, a devastating insect that attacked the region's vineyards and destroyed much of the European vines. The phylloxera epidemic forced Mendoza's winegrowers to rethink their approach and look for innovative solutions to protect their crops. Many began to graft European vines onto phylloxera-resistant rootstocks, allowing the gradual recovery of Mendoza's wine industry.

The Modern Era: The Revival of Mendoza Wine

The 21st century has seen an impressive resurgence in Mendoza’s wine industry, with a renewed focus on quality, innovation and sustainability. Mendoza wineries have invested in cutting-edge technology and sustainable farming practices to improve the quality of their wines and protect the environment. At the same time, they have explored new grape varieties and winemaking styles to meet the changing demands of the global market.

Today, Mendoza wines are acclaimed worldwide for their exceptional quality, diversity and distinctive character. From elegant Malbecs to refreshing Torrontés, the region offers a wide range of options to suit all tastes and occasions. Whether you prefer to explore the smaller boutique wineries or visit the large, internationally recognised wine houses, Mendoza has something for every wine lover.

In conclusion, the history of Mendoza wine is one of tradition, innovation and passion that has stood the test of time. From its humble beginnings in the vineyards of indigenous peoples to its place on the world wine stage, Mendoza's wine industry has gone through numerous challenges and triumphs over the centuries. Today, it continues to be a source of pride and prosperity for the region.

The art of pairing

Tips for pairing Mendoza wines with local cuisine.

Wine and food pairing is an ancient art that has been practiced and perfected over the centuries. Nowhere in the world is this art more evident than in the wine region of Mendoza, Argentina. With its abundance of high-quality wines and rich culinary tradition, Mendoza offers endless possibilities for those who wish to explore the magic of pairing.

In this blog, we'll guide you through the basics of wine pairing and give you practical tips for pairing Mendoza wines with delicious local cuisine. From classic roast beef dishes to exquisite empanadas and regional cheeses, you'll discover how to bring out the flavors and enhance your dining experience with the perfect wine.

The basics of pairing:

Before we dive into the details, it's important to understand the basic principles of pairing. In its simplest form, pairing involves combining wines and foods in ways that complement and enhance each other. This can be achieved through the harmony of flavors, the contrasting of characteristics, or the creation of interesting contrasts on the palate.

Some of the aspects to consider when pairing wines and food include the body of the wine (light, medium or full), its level of acidity, sweetness and tannins, as well as the flavours and textures of the dish in question. In the case of Mendoza, where Malbec is king and a wide variety of red and white wines are produced, it is important to take these characteristics into account when selecting the right wine to accompany your meal.

Practical tips for pairing Mendoza wines with local cuisine:

    Blog Image 9

  1. Malbec and carne asada (asado): One of the region's classic pairings, Mendoza's robust Malbec is the perfect companion for a delicious Argentine asado. With its notes of ripe fruit, spices, and soft tannins, Malbec perfectly complements the intense flavors of carne asada, highlighting its juiciness and depth of flavor. For an even more exquisite pairing, opt for a full-bodied Malbec with a good tannic structure.

    Blog Image 9

  1. Torrontés and empanadas: An aromatic and refreshing white wine, Torrontés is the ideal choice to accompany empanadas, a classic of Mendoza cuisine.
